百貨公司週年慶開始了，從事百貨業的學生Cindy跟他的老師說："Our department store is on sale.”她看到老師臉上愣了一下，馬上補充了一句"It’s an anniversary sale." （是週年慶）。
"Our department store is on sale.” 這句話是錯的，老外聽到這句話，會以為你的百貨公司要賣給別人，可能就會脫口而出地說：“I am sorry." 因為他以為你的公司賣掉，你可能會失業。
「我們百貨公司在打折」這句話要說成：
Our department store is having an anniversary sale.（我們百貨公司在做周年慶折扣。）
如果是百貨公司裡的東西打折出售，像T-shirt之類的，則可以說：
This T-shirt is on sale.（這件T恤在打折。）
不要看sales這個字那麼簡單，它的錯誤率高得嚇人，我們來看兩個例子：
1.Sales不是「業務員」
我是業務員。
（X）I am sales.
（O）I am a sales representative.
Sales是業務、業務銷售、業績，但不是業務員，業務員用sales person或sales rep或sales representative.
2.For sale vs. On sale
這兩個片語差一個字，意思不太一樣。For sale意思是「待售」、「供出售」，例如：
I am sorry. The computer is not for sale.（這個電腦不賣。）
On sale有兩個意思，「進入銷售循環」、「折扣銷售」的意思。
The tickets go on sale this Friday.（票本周五開賣。）
I bought this coat on sale, for NT$500 less than the original price.（我打折時買了這件外套，比原價還低500元。）
