台灣人的英文到底行不行？一個老美：台灣人對自己太嚴格！－威爾斯美語桃園分校

我覺得我的中文不好，你覺得你的英文不好？
I don’t think my Chinese is good, and you think your English is bad?

1.美國（女）

台灣人的英文口語能力還不錯！如果外國人突然問他們路
The Taiwanese can actually speak very well, like if so aggressive like “Hey! Where is this place?”

我不覺得台灣人會怕被問，他們可能比較怕自己回答的英文答案或方式會不會有錯
I don’t think it’s frightening to them. It’s more like “Oh God, what’s the right answer? How do I tell them? What do I say first?”

對於我們外國人來講，可能是細節部份的問題
I think it’s a detail thing for a lot of foreigners about like that.

因為我們不會講中文，所以你用英文幫我們指路可能得更詳細點
Because obviously we can’t speak the language, so you really have to get so specific.

他們怕講錯就更不敢講，另外也有可能因為老外英文都講很快
That could be a thing kind of holds a lot of Taiwanese back to speaking the English, and also maybe how fast (we speak)

我想告訴台灣人：「不要想太多！」
I want for them to understand that it’s okay

你們可以慢慢說，反正又不趕時間
and you can speak very slow, you can speak as slow as you want.

真的有自信一點吧！不管你們會多少單字，就算只有一個或者你只知道路名，我們都可以想辦法來推敲你的意思
They should be more confident, definitely! It doesn’t matter how many English words that you know. If you know one. If you know road. We can work off of that.

2.美國（男）

你們有想過日本人的心情嗎？他們很多人學很久的英文，但發音問題通常會困擾著他們
The only thing I have to compare to in the areas is maybe Japanese, they have huge problem with pronunciation and stuff even ones who were taking it for a long time, so

反正我們外國人也常迷路，不要害羞來跟我們聊天，搞不好我們也需要幫忙
Foreigners get lost really easily, please we need your help as much as you can please just come up and talk to us, ask if we need anything.

我覺得大部份的外國人也想交新朋友
I think most foreigners really wanna make new friends.

3.美國（女2）

我覺得很多台灣人對自己太嚴格，覺得學了很久的英文就不可以有犯錯的空間
I think a lot of Taiwanese are very hard on themselves when it comes to English speaking, because they feel they’ve been learning it for so long that they should know it.

對我來講我可以猜出來對方的意思就算他們文法上有錯
For me, I can pick it up. I know exactly what they are saying. It might not be grammatically correct.

只要我們能交談，聽得懂一些字，文法不對也不會死
As long as there are some dialogue, there are some meaning associated with the conversation. I don’t even think it matters.

你們願意用英文跟我們溝通已經很好了！我自己學中文一年
You speaking English in general is nice to us like now I’ve been learning Chinese for a year.

因為我中文也沒很好，我們憑什麼去批評你們的英文程度呢？
But I’m not that good myself so I can’t possibly judge you, based on your level of English when my level of Chinese is not even that good.
