New York's elite have long taken to beach towns and luxury estates to escape the craziness of the city during the summer. One go-to spot: Tavern Island, a 3.5-acre strip of land that sits in the Long Island Sound, near Rowayton, Connecticut.

The private island, which was recently listed for $11 million, offers views of New York City, according to 6sqft.com. The island is accessible from the mainland by boat, and is only about an hour away from the city. And with penthouse apartments in Manhattan starting to sell for $100 million, Tavern Island's price tag really doesn't seem that bad.

The grounds are equipped with a stately six-bedroom manor that dates back to 1900, as well as a two-bedroom cottage, a two-bedroom boat house and a one-bedroom tea house. The new owners will also have access to the beautifully landscaped grounds, a private beach, an in-ground pool and an outdoor fire pit.

And if the island's amenities aren't enough to attract a new buyer, its celebrity history might. Billy Rose, a Broadway lyricist, owned the island in the 1950s and '60s and hosted numerous parties attended by A-listers, including Marilyn Monroe and Barbara Streisand.
